Why I Joined the Nouns

A personal note here today, if I may.

This week I joined the Nouns by acquiring Noun #1074.

It’s the culmination of a three year journey for me. I started covering Nouns DAO in Metaversal right after they launched in 2021, and I’ve written about a dozen or so articles tracking the group’s progress ever since.

Along the way, I’ve joked that I’ve become the Nouns #1 fan. Indeed, ever since my first article on them, I knew I’d eventually join the collective.

Why? Various reasons:

1) The smart contracts underlying the project are a technical work of Ethereum art in and of themselves and have birthed the “Nounish DAO” primitive, which now has a significant footprint across the NFT space.

2) The Nouns art is fully onchain and, in my opinion, aesthetically and minimalistically marvelous as designed by some of the leading crypto-native artists, like Gremplin and Timpers.

3) Nouns are a wide-open grassroots brand in the making and has backed efforts around art, charity, esports, public goods, and beyond. The collective funds things no one else will in a way that I personally find magical.

All that said, Nouns is the kind of project that perfectly fits with my tastes. Experimental, novel, innovative, impactful.

And to this, skeptics will say $10k is a lot of money to spend to join any group. I totally understand that, but I’ve also been saving up for three years for this moment, precisely because I believe in the Nounish vision and dream.

Also, make no mistake, this isn’t about financial value. I will never resell this Noun (only swap it for a different one if anything), and even if I did it wouldn’t be for profit. Nounflation, or the one Noun-a-day model, means the floor price will undoubtedly trend lower and lower over time by design for more accessibility. And that’s a good thing!

Ultimately, I joined Nouns now because this is a project I’ve yearned to be a part of, and I finally felt that I could afford it. I couldn’t take it anymore! This is a creative experiment that beckons to me and that I feel very fulfilled in finally joining because of the cool work ahead.

So, in parting, my message to you is to find your passion in crypto like I have. Find a project that you love and dive in because you want to. Believe in something, dream big, and work towards that vision. Good things will come accordingly, in a variety of ways.

Sure, the haters think nihilistically that crypto is all just speculation games. The truth is there are so many pockets of compelling cultural efforts here, and the Nouns are a perfect demonstration of that.

To this I say, find your Nouns, find what moves you in crypto whatever it is, and dive in. Be patient and methodical, and your journey will come to you…
