Solana surpassed Ethereum and Polygon in transaction speed

A recent CoinGecko report highlighted Solana’s dominance as the fastest major blockchain. With an average speed of 1,504 transactions per second (TPS), Solana outperforms Ethereum by 46 times and is over five times faster than Polygon, the leading Ethereum scaling solution.

On April 6, 2023, amid a surge in meme cryptocurrency activity, Solana demonstrates peak performance, achieving the highest daily TPS on record.

Despite this impressive feat, it’s important to note that Solana is only operating at 1.6% of its theoretical maximum speed of 65,000 TPSnoted CoinGecko.

Blockchain that is not compatible with Ethereum virtual machine (EVM), typically outperforms EVM-compatible ones. On average, non-EVM blockchain networks are 3.9 times faster than their EVM counterparts. Sui, another non-EVM blockchain, recorded the second highest actual TPS at 854, which was due to the game’s popularity of 8192. Other fast non-EVM blockchains include TON with 175 TPS and Near-Protocol with 118 TPS.

In contrast, EVM and EVM-compatible blockchain networks average only 74 TPS. BNB Faucet Smart Chain (BSC) leads the EVM category with 378 TPS achieved during a spike in chain activity on December 7, 2023. It is followed by Polygon with 190 TPS on November 16, 2023, making it the fastest among Ethereum scaling solutions and 8.4 times faster than ETH itself.

Ethereum and its most extensive scaling solutions together reached an actual TPS of 500, lagging behind Solana и Sui. Other important Ethereum scaling solutions include Arbitum with 59 TPS, Linea with 56 TPS, Base with 37 TPS and Mantle with 25 TPS.

The survey highlighted that almost all major blockchains have recorded their highest actual TPS in the past year. The only exception is Thorchain, which peaked in May 2022.
